| 1. Standard Catalog of Comic Books |
|
By: John Miller, Maggie Thompson Publisher: Krause Publications September 20, 2005
The Overstreet Comic Price Guide has been around so long that it's become ubiquitous in the industry. It's the default standard of most collectors. Now while Krause Publications does out their own yearly price guide, the Standard Catalog of Comics is a whole other animal. This massive, 1600 plus page tome lists more comic titles than any other guide at over 165,000 comics, far more than any other... more

| 3. Tuff Stuff Standard Catalog Of Football Cards |
|
By: Editors Of Tuff Stuff Magazine Publisher: Krause Publications October 10, 2005
This catalog is arranged by manufacturer, then within each manufacturer, by year. That's OK if you collect by card maker, but I prefer a catalog that is organized by year, then by manufacturer.
The arrangement of the Tuff Stuff catalog makes it very difficult to see which sets were released in a given year, and therefore to know how "complete" your collection is for any given year.more

| 5. The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America |
|
By: David Hajdu Publisher: Picador February 03, 2009
It's never been easy to publish comic books for all ages in America. While other countries long ago incorporated the medium into their reading habits, comics and graphic novels have remained, here in the States, the domain of the young--at least in the popular mindset. And while many have pointed out that comics have grown up--and that there's a wealth of material available for all age ranges--it's... more

| 6. ACME Catalog: Quality is Our #1 Dream |
|
By: Charles Carney, ACME Publisher: Chronicle Books October 25, 2006
Viewers of "The Road Runner" and other Looney Tunes cartoon shows are very familiar with the products of the Acme Company. Whenever a character receives a new gadget or product, the source is the Acme Company. My favorites were the antics of Wile E. Coyote in his constant attempts to catch the Road Runner, the gadgets were generally spectacular and always flop for one reason or another. This... more

| 8. A Complete History of American Comic Books |
|
By: Shirrel Rhoades Publisher: Peter Lang Publishing 2008-01
American comic books had their origins as reprinted compilations of newspaper comic strips. It was with the introduction of super heroes beginning in the 1930s with Superman and Batman that illustrated books of original material began to appear on the market along side the popular 'pulp fiction' magazines of the day. In "A Complete History Of American Comic Books", former Marvel Comics publisher and... more

| 10. Casper The Friendly Ghost 60th Anniversary Special |
|
By: Various By: Various Publisher: Dark Horse December 09, 2009
If you'd like some proof that comics now are quite sugarcoated compared to those of decades past, take a gander at page four, panel four of the first Casper the Friendly Ghost story, in which an evil, unnamed man has killed his brother and aims to do the same to his nephew. The look on his face and this little snippet of nefarious dialogue sum it up best: "Your father, the king, is dead. The executioner... more
