| 1. Showcase Presents: Unknown Soldier, Vol. 1 |
|
By: Joe Kubert, Bob Haney, Frank Robbins, Robert Kanigher, David Michelinie, Archie Goodwin Publisher: DC Comics November 15, 2006
I remember these from when I was a kid in school. Although if you read the entire collection it can be confusing as the Unknown Soldier seems to have been in a couple different places at the same time (like around the Battle of the Bulge or Normandy) but the artwork is superb and many of the storylines are well-written. A good book! ... more

|
By: Robert Kanigher Publisher: DC Comics May 01, 2006
Russ Heath lives! Heath is the greatest graphic combat artist of all time. His renderings of tanks, rifles and soldiers are almost photo realistic, but with an artist's touch. Especially satisfying are his facial renditions of combat troops; gaunt, disheveled and "staring 1,000 yards ahead".
There are some enjoyable "quirks", such as the mis-labeling of German Panther tanks as... more

THIS was what was so wonderful about the Silver Age, especially at DC -- no matter how absurd the premise, it was always worth a try. And DC really understood that its audience consisted of 12 year old boys with short attention spans and a desire to suspend disbelief. This was truly a high concept idea -- the cover of Star Spangled War Stories always depicted the gist of the conflict in one memorable... more

During the 1960s, as I was getting into serious comic book reading and collecting, my interests were mostly centered on following the super hero offerings from Marvel and DC. This period had a diverse mix of other genres such as romance, mystery/fantasy, funny animal, and war comics. While I enjoyed contemporary TV programs like Combat and the Gallant Men, war comics didn't attract me. The "War Comic... more

|
By: Robert Kanigher Publisher: DC Comics June 17, 2008
The stories make little sense. Almost every German tank is a Tiger. The undergunned title character, as it were, easily blows most of them up. The Ghost is never involved in stories other than to dispense cryptic, fortune-cookie expressions at the first of each story. And one less star for vol. 2 because there's a lot less art by Joe Kubert. But this is tanks shoot at other tanks. If you're 12 years... more

I'm not into the collection of the actual comic book these days, but more interested in the story line and develoment of the techniques used in illustration and themes. This is the first of the collection and it is a great start to capture the formation Sgt Rock from "Our Army at War."... more

I used to go over the local spinner racks with a fine-toothed comb as a child, looking for appearances by Hans von Hammer, and, looking back at the material reprinted in this beauiful hardback from an adult vantage point, it was worth all the effort. These stories are peak efforts from an artist who's had a lot of peaks (Hawkman, Tor, Sergeant Rock, and Tarzan come to mind as equivalent achievements)... more

In the 1960s, Marvel changed the face of superhero comics when Stan Lee and company introduced the Fantastic Four and followed it up with other heroes. The transformation was due to the characters, which were now flawed individuals, far more interesting than the one-dimensional characters of the past. Marvel's main rival, DC, lagged in making a similar change; as shown in the Showcase volumes from... more
