| 1. Legion of Super-Heroes: Enemy Rising |
| By: Jim Shooter Publisher: DC Comics October 28, 2008
A long time ago, in much simpler times, a teenage boy took over the writing chores for a superhero team comic set 1,000 years in the future. That boy, Jim Shooter, would grow up to be one of the most powerful and famous men in the industry. That team, The Legion of Super-Heroes, would go on to become one of the most popular groups in comics...before being wiped out of existence by a corporate decision... more

| | 2. Harbinger: The Beginning |
| By: Jim Shooter, David Lapham Publisher: Valiant Entertainment, LLC August 29, 2007
I was a second-hand Valiant reader. I only got to know the Valiant Universe through a friend and later my dad collected the Valiant titles Turok and X-O Manowar. I only got to see the characters from Harbinger in crossovers and couldn't get a good feel for them. Now after all these years I get to go back to the beginning and enjoy these stories. First off, the re-coloring job they did looks... more

| | 4. Fantastic Four Visionaries, Vol. 6 (v. 6) |
| By: John Byrne, Ron Wilson, Al Milgrom By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics October 18, 2006
3-1/2 stars. I consider volumes 3, 6 & 7 in this series to be about average to slightly above average in quality. In volume 6, Jerry Ordway takes over on inks to lighten Byrne's FF/ Alpha Flight workload. Really, I'm a *huge* Byrne fan, but this Byrne-Ordway team-up just didn't really work for me. They're both well-respected professionals; I just didn't think they were a great artistic match. The... more

| By: Stan Lee, Gerry Conway, Carla Conway, Roy Thomas, Linda Fite, Tom DeFalco, Carol Seuling, Steve Gerber, Chris Claremont, Jim Shooter, David Michelinie, Don Heck, John Romita, Jim Mooney, John Buscema, Joe Sinnott, Marie Severin, John Romita Jr., George Tuska, Bob Hall Publisher: Marvel Comics September 06, 2006
Fabulous book with Marvel's leading ladies of the 1980s!
What's really great is reading stories about Ms. Marvel, Shanna the She-Devil, Storm, Rogue, Black Widow...
... and realizing Dazzler -- the silver-suited rollerskating dance diva -- has the most respectable issue of them all!
Great colors, superb compilation! A must read!... more

| | 6. Essential Ghost Rider, Vol. 2 (Marvel Essentials) (v. 2) |
| By: Gerry Conway, Don Glut, Jim Shooter, Roger McKenzie, Don Perlin, Jim Starlin, Michael Fleisher, Gil Kane, Sam Grainger, Don Heck, Tom Sutton, Steve Leialoha, Carmine Infantino By: Don Perlin Publisher: Marvel Comics February 28, 2007
Close to 600 pages, this bulky volume chronicles 1976-1980 with Ghost Rider #21-#50.
This is an excellent supernatural series, as Johnny Blaze is haunted by the demon - Zarathos - and his nomadic existence (a modern, misunderstood cowboy in the west) leads him to those who prey on the innocent when the lights dim for the night.
There are guest stars like Professor X and Doctor... more

| | 9. What If? Classic, Vol. 2 |
| By: Roy Thomas, Jim Shooter, Don Glut, Jim Craig, Herb Trimpe, Gil Kane Publisher: Marvel Comics January 04, 2006
The original premise was that the writers and artists who worked on the original would get a chance to cut loose and create a wildly innovative alternative to the books, something that couldn't happen in the originals. Thus you would have Jim Shooter penning a tale of the Avengers, or Herb Trimpe doing a Hulk story or Frank Robbins drawing the Invaders. (All three of these possibilities DID occur... more

This "Marvel Essential" volume collects black-and-white reprints of the first 31 issues of "Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man" with original cover dates from December 1976 to May 1979. Marvel created this second Spider-Man title in 1976 after the continued success of its flagship "Amazing Spider-Man" series.
