Well, I purchased this for my husband, who likes Tolkien as a writer. He loved the Hobbit and the Lord of the rings books before they became movies. I must not have realized what I was purchasing, because it's not another story by Tolkien. It's strange and different and most of it is not in english... more

There is a passage in one of the stories collected here that accurately sums up the content of the book itself. In "Leaf By Niggle," Tolkien describes a painting that the artist Niggle has been working on: "It had begun with a leaf caught in the wind, and it became a tree; and the tree grew, sending out innumerable branches, and thrusting out the most fantastic roots...Niggle lost interest in his other... more

| 4. The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien |
|
By: J. R. R. Tolkien, Humphrey Carpenter Publisher: Mariner Books 2000-06
I consider this volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's letters, edited by his official biographer Humphrey Carpenter, to be among the most essential of his works. In these letters, collected from his youth until his last few months of life, we see Tolkien's personality and the evolution of his thinking about his created worlds at its finest.
Tolkien was one of the great letter writers of all time... more

By: J.R.R. Tolkien Publisher: Mariner Books October 14, 2008
Christopher Tolkien has done a great job editing the prequel material to the Lord of the Rings to produce this dramatic and stirring tale of a tragic warrior. The book earns a place on my fantasy bookshelf because no fan of the LOTR could fail to find this of interest.
But although J.R.R.Tolkien was a great writer, it does not follow that this is a great book nor would it have any interest... more

I have already reviewed the book. I am reviewing this VERSION of it. It is published in 7 volumes, which is rare. Of course, you can tell. Lord of the rings.. 7 books??? If you look in the table of contents, it says 'book one' etc... on top of that, you get Tolkien's title for each book. So buy this version to keep sealed as your collectible. I garuntee it will be worth a fortune someday... more

| 7. The Hobbit: An Illustrated Edition of the Fantasy Classic |
|
By: Charles Dixon, J. R. R. Tolkien April 18, 2008
I found the Hobbit to be a very well written book. It was about a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. I enjoyed the character of Bilbo very much, and I enjoyed hearing about his life inside his hobbit hole. JRR Tolkien did a very nice job of describing Bilbo, and I could see a clear picture in my mind of him. JRR Tolkien is also a very clever author. He has clever solutions to traps. For example, during Bilbo's... more

| 8. A Question of Time: J.R.R. Tolkien's Road to Faerie |
|
By: Verlyn Flieger Publisher: Kent State University Press 2001-12
I think the author's understanding of time and its fluid quality is very perceptive and I found the book highly readable due to this exploration of Tolkien's writing.
Certainly not a book for the novice, but if you are interested in some of the ideas that must have fed Tolkien's fertile imagination then you will enjoy this book. ... more

It seems most of the reviews logged here are for the book(s). So I wanted to log a note about the 13 disk The Lord of the Rings (BBC Dramatization) [Abridged] (Audio CD). It is an excellent portrayal of the trilogy. It's an audio production with several different actors portraying characters with added sound effects. I highly recommend listening to this; its great entertainment when you want to relax... more
